Martin McGowan was born in Vermont and graduated with honors from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1987. His awards include the Cresson Traveling Scholarship to Europe and the Alexander and Dutrow prizes for outstanding art work.

Martin works out of McGowan Studios, which he built in Newark, Vermont in 1992. Here, he welds monumental steel sculptures out of recycled farm equipment and other found metals.

His dynamic animals - especially horses in motion - and powerful human figures have sold nationally in public and commercial spaces, as well as to private collections and estates. Martin particularly welcomes site-specific commissions that allow him to develop sculpture tailored to the commercial or individual interests of his clients.
